Adam McKay was born on April 17, 1968 in Philadelphia. Trained for theatrical improvisation thanks to the Second City company and the Upright Citizens Brigade, he began his career alongside Michael Moore in his show Michael Moore’s America: The Incredible Truth.

Adam McKay went on to work for NBC’s Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001. During his time at SNL, he met actor Will Ferrell who became one of his best friends. Together they wrote the script for the movie Starring Anchor: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, which Adam directed in 2004 and in which Will Ferrell plays the lead role. The film is a great success that allows the director to launch his career. He reunited with his friend for his second film Ricky Bobby: King of the Circuit in 2006, Brothers Against Their Will in 2008 and Very Bad Cops in 2010.

The year 2013 marks his reunion with the entire team of Star Anchor when he directs Living Legends, the sequel to this comedy. 2 years later, his career takes a turn with the film The Big Short, the heist of the century. This comedy-drama about financiers who predicted the 2007 economic crisis was a huge international success and earned Adam his first Oscar nomination for best director and his first Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

Adam McKay is married to actress-director Shira Piven, sister of actor Jeremy Piven.
