RuPaul’s Drag Race star Chi Chi DeVayne, née Zavion Davenport, died Thursday at the age of 34 after being hospitalized with pneumonia in her hometown of Shreveport. Shortly after the news of her death was announced, her family released an official statement on the star’s Instagram page. It reads: “On behalf of the Davenport / Wyandon family, it is with immense sadness that my family and I announce the passing of my beloved son Zavion Michael Davenport, the famous Chi Chi DeVayne. Out of respect for the immediate family, please await further information and guidance regarding final arrangements, memorials, and method of delivering condolences and expressions of kindness. His final words to family and friends: ‘Never give up’. ”
Chi Chi’s untimely death occurred a month after being released from the hospital following a biopsy for suspected kidney failure and high blood pressure. Just a week ago, the star announced in a story posted on Instagram: “I’m back! Keep me in your prayers, I’ll be back soon.” In February, the reality star revealed on Hey Qween that she had been diagnosed with scleroderma, a chronic, incurable disease that causes the skin to tighten and thick scar tissue to form around internal organs, impairing their ability to function.
“May his generous and loving spirit shine upon us all”
On Instagram, RuPaul was keen to comment on the star’s tragic passing: “I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Chi Chi DeVayne. I am so grateful that we were able to discover her beautiful and kind soul. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. May her generous and loving spirit shine upon us all. On behalf of VH1, World of Wonder and the cast and crew of RuPaul’s Drag Race, I extend my deepest sympathy, from our family to his. ”
