And for good reason, the former footballer was hospitalized due to his colon cancer. At 82, the man has lived in recent years with major health problems. In 2014, he was hospitalized for a serious urinary tract infection. Five years later, doctors removed a kidney stone. Then in September 2021, he discovered that he had a colon tumor. If he has always wanted to reassure his fans, this time the disease prevailed.

Since the announcement of his death, many tributes have been broadcast. In Brazil, the government has declared three days of national mourning. It is in his country that the former legend of the round ball will be buried. “The funeral wake of the greatest footballer of all time will take place at the Urbano Caldeira stadium, (in the district of) Vila Belmiro, where he amazed the world, explained in a press release the club which counted the legendary Brazilian in its ranks from 1956 to 1974”, specifies the press release of his football club.

A mourning for an entire nation

A large ceremony will be organized: “The body will leave the Albert Einstein hospital to go directly to the stadium in the early hours of Monday January 2, and the coffin will be placed in the center of the field. Brazilians will be able to come and pay their last respects to Pelé during a ceremony which should then last 24 hours, “until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, when the procession will take place through the streets of Santos, passing through Canal 6. , where Pelé’s mother, Dona Celeste, lived, then to the cemetery of the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, for the burial reserved for the members of the family”
