Mathilde of Belgium, 49, has been traveling to the Sultanate of Oman since February 2, 2022. The Queen of the Belgians and her husband, Philippe of Belgium, 61, have met several times in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on February 3. Among other places, Belgian rulers visited the Great Mosque of Sultan Qaboos. This mosque is known to be majestic. It is the main place of worship in Oman. It was Sultan Qabus ibn Said, who died at the age of 70 in January 2020, who commissioned the construction of the mosque. In the mosque is the largest hand-knotted carpet in one piece. It also houses the largest chandelier in the world.
The candlestick testifies to the wealth of the sultanate. It is entirely set in 24 carat gold. King Philippe of Belgium, 61, and Queen Mathilde of Belgium “were greeted as they exited their plane by Crown Prince Theyazin”, reports Histoires Royales. The latter then received them in audience at the palace. On February 3, the King and Queen of the Belgians were solemnly welcomed by the new Sultan, Haitham ben Tarek. King Philippe of Belgium then attended a conference focusing on agreements to be signed between Oman and Belgium on renewable energy. The visit to the prestigious Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos comes after this conference.
