The Princess of Wales owned a silver 1.6L Ghia sedan. This Ford Escort had been given to her by Prince Charles as an engagement gift. A gift she received 2 months before their wedding. Lady Di loved this car since she drove it often. Especially to watch Prince Charles play polo. The hood of the car was adorned with a silver frog. This is a copy of the original mascot donated by his sister, Sarah.
Princess Diana had stopped using this car after giving birth to Prince William in 1982. As a result, it was sold to an antique dealer for the modest sum of £ 6,000 ($ 11,000). This car has therefore been driven by a fan of the royal family since the year 2000 or so. This owner took care to drive it sparingly while being careful not to share its story with those close to it. This Tuesday June 29th, this Ford Escort was auctioned online by auctioneer Reeman Dansie, of Colchester, Essex for £ 52,640 ($ 97,000)!
“The car now belongs to a Chilean museum”
Lewis Rabett, of Reeman Dansie, confided that it is a Chilean museum which is the happy purchaser of this car. “Being in South America is a testament to the level of global interest in the car,” said Lewis Rabett before adding, “It’s also a testament to Diana and her lasting legacy.”
In addition, the car would still carry its original license plate (WEV 297W). It would still have its original paint as well as its original upholstery. Lady Di’s Ford Escort now has 83,000 miles on the clock.
