It was a rumor that had been circulating for a long time. In 2015, in his memoir Enough about me, American actor Burt Reynolds, who died in 2018 at the age of 82, claimed to have received a word of thanks from Princess Diana following his separation, after five years of marriage, with Loni Anderson in 1993. A stormy divorce that had made the headlines of the press which would have allowed Lady Di not to make the headlines of the tabloids while she too was living tensions with her husband, the Prince Charles and the rest of the royal family. “Princess Diana sent me a note of thanks for preventing her from making the cover of People magazine,” Burt Reynolds wrote.
Loni Anderson confirms rumor
The rumor was confirmed by Loni Anderson during an American show called Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen this Thursday, March 11. It was a viewer who asked her the question: “Is it true that Princess Diana has already sent a word of thanks to Burt because your separation prevented her from making the cover of the tabloids a bit?” The actress, best known for her role as receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on the American television series WKRP in Cincinnati, responded with a smile, “Yes, that’s right.” While host Andy Cohen appeared to be surprised by Loni Anderson’s response, he did not ask the actress for clarification.
As a reminder, at the beginning of the 90s, the press articles multiplied about the failure of the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Di and evoke the relationship that the heir to the British crown would maintain with Camilla Parker-Bowles. The divorce will be requested on December 9, 1992 but it will not be pronounced until December 1996.
