The court has decided. Los Angeles authorities have awarded the sum of 29 million dollars, or 27 million euros, in compensation to Vanessa Bryant in the case of the photos of the helicopter accident in which her husband Kobe Bryant lost his life on January 26, 2020. The photos showed the remains of the American basketball star, but also of his daughter present on board with him and also deceased, Gianna Bryant. Members of the police and emergency services took photos and then showed them to members of their entourage. The compensation paid to Vanessa Bryant includes the $15 million already awarded to Vanessa Bryant by a Los Angeles court in August 2022 for the same reason.
As a reminder, the other people on board also died on this terrible day of January 26. The seven other victims are members of the basketball club as well as the pilot of the racing car. Vanessa Bryant feared that the photos leaked on the net and wanted to take legal action. “Today marks the success of Ms. Bryant’s courageous battle, her lawyer Luis Li said in a statement. She fought for her husband, her daughter and all those whose deceased family members were treated with the same lack of respect. We hope that this victory in court and this settlement will put an end to this practice.”
A successful career for Kobe Bryant
Kobe Bryant was 41 at the time – his daughter Gianna was 13. The Los Angeles Lakers star retired in 2016. He was crowned the League’s best player in the 2007-2008 season. He was the father of four children with his wife Vanessa Bryant: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka and Capri.
After the dramatic accident which cost the life of Kobe Bryant, his daughter but also seven other people, an investigation had been opened. Nine legal proceedings and 35 lawyers were on this file before discovering the circumstances of the tragedy.
