Life hasn’t always smiled on Keanu Reeves. The actor, who celebrates his 56th birthday this Wednesday, September 2, is a man, a companion and an accomplished actor. But its existence has been marked by several tragedies. First there was the death of his best friend, River Phoenix, brother of Joaquin Phoenix, who tragically died in 1993 from an overdose. While healing from this grief, Keanu Reeves met Jennifer Syme in 1998 at a party. The young actress, eight years younger, quickly became his companion. A year after the start of their relationship, the happy couple were preparing for the birth of their daughter, Ava, due in early 2000. But in her eighth month of pregnancy, Jennifer Syme had to give birth urgently. On Christmas Eve 1999, Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend became the parents of a stillborn baby girl. Shortly after the baby’s tragic funeral, the couple broke up.

Despite the breakup, Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Syme remained very friends until April 2001. On April 1 of that year, the two exes had met in a restaurant in San Francisco. The next day, April 2, 2001, at around 6 a.m., Jennifer Syme died. While driving through the streets of Los Angeles, the young woman – still on antidepressants after Ava’s death – lost control of her vehicle. She was killed instantly, thrown from her Jeep after several barrels. Keanu Reeves did not publicly expand on the drama, but a relative testified anonymously that he was “having a hard time” getting over it. “Mourning changes form, but it never ends”, explained the actor years later, still haunted by these tragic deaths.

Keanu Reeves: “This is absurd”

“People have a misconception that you can face it and say, ‘Here we go, and I’m better.’ They’re wrong. When the people you love are gone, you’re alone, continued Keanu Reeves, who has since remade her life with Alexandra Grant. I miss being a part of their life and mine as well. I wonder what the present would look like if they were here, and what we could have done together. I miss all the great things they’ll never be. ” Still haunted by the memory of his best friend, his daughter and his ex-girlfriend, he continued, “It’s not fair! It’s absurd. All you can do is hope that the grief will end. transforms and, instead of feeling pain and confusion, feeling comfort ”.
