It was in 1996, on the reconstructed bridge of the famous Titanic, that they crossed paths for the first time. Respectively aged 21 and 22, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio had just secured the role of a lifetime, but were unaware that they had also signed for a long friendship. For over twenty-five years, the performers of Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater have loved and supported each other, forming one of Hollywood’s greatest friendships. And while there are many who one day hope to see them become more than just friends, Kate and Leo are living proof that friendship between men and women can work.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s friendship began in July 1996 in Darthmouth, Nova Scotia. The first scene they shot together was the one in which Jack portrayed Rose, a scene that was particularly embarrassing for young actors who had never toured together. In order to relieve the pressure and put Leonardo at ease, Kate Winslet, who had already proven herself in the films of Heavenly Creatures and Reason and Feelings, made a joke to her colleague. Before the scene was filmed, she covered her naked body with a simple coat, which she opened in front of DiCaprio to lighten the mood. At the end of the filming of Titanic, the latter gave his partner a ring engraved with a message, the details of which were never revealed.
“Leo, I love you with all my heart”
Thus was born the complicity of the two actors. Ten years later, they found themselves on the set of Rebel Wedding, a production by Sam Mendes, to whom Winslet was married at the time. For her role, the actress received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, an award for which she thanked her partner with great emotion, declaring: “Leo, I am so happy to be here and to be able to tell you how much I love you, how much I have loved you for 13 years. I love you with all my heart “. In 2016, Leonardo DiCaprio had his turn and won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant. Winslet was present in the assembly to support him, with tears in his eyes.
But in addition to supporting each other in their careers, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are also present for each other in their personal lives. During the actress’ two divorces, Jack Dawson’s interpreter was always present to help her. The Holiday star once explained her friend saved her from despair. They also often go on vacation together, allowing their children to become friends in turn.
In an interview published in 2020, Kate Winslet said she was “very grateful” to have Leonardo DiCaprio in her life. Even today, the two actors sometimes exchange lines from the movie Titanic, “because only they can”, and “they find it very funny”.
