Eurovision star Sam Ryder unexpectedly met Kate Middleton at Buckingham Palace. He participated in the “Party at the Palace” concert on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The famous 32-year-old musician shot to fame in 2020 for his covers on TikTok amid the UK lockdown. He told PEOPLE a few things about the meetings he had during this concert: “I was at the palace for an interview, so I met a lot of staff members who work there. Buckingham Palace staff are amazing. They are so quintessentially British in their comedy. Like a sort of “Welcome to the big house, buddy!” and stuff like that. They just make it so amazing.” “We were banging our fists and saying ‘hello,’ and then one of them said, ‘Have you ever met a member of the royal family before? I said no.’ And they said, ‘Do you want to change that now? “, he added.
A few seconds later, the star finds himself facing Kate Middleton in the middle of Buckingham Palace. A meeting he would never have imagined: “I said ‘hello’ to Kate, and she asked me questions about the performance”. “She’s so nice and said the Royals have been supporting me for a while and throughout Eurovision,” he added. The two stars were then joined by Princess Beatrice: “She was so lovely, encouraging and supportive. And just generous with her kindness. She was just saying that they all appreciated how the team handled the Eurovision trip, and it meant so much to all of us. What I understand is that a lot of royals had seen Eurovision and were supporting my song from home, which means a lot.”
Ryder Meets Legends
“It was amazing, and it was so inspiring to receive the encouragement from the royal family because they champion such similar themes that Eurovision also celebrates, such as unity, unity and solidarity,” said added Ryder. “And this gathering of people in a world that seems to find ways to disconnect us at all times,” concludes the young musician. Ryder will always remember this evening, which allowed him to meet “absolute legends”. “I met Alicia Keys, I met Nile Rodgers, Rod Stewart…and then we went to the Palace.” “There was no cooler view in the house, and we were able to experience it first hand. It was just amazing,” he continues.

“A few days before we have a rehearsal, so you can follow the rhythm of the stage and get an idea of what it would be like. Obviously, there is no one. The road is blocked, so few people can see this concert,” says the musician. “And that’s about five days before the event!” There were people camping on The Mall to get a good spot,” he adds. At this point, Ryder realized he had a minor performance issue. Despite everything, he was able to find a solution: “The Jubilee stage was huge and during the first rehearsal, I finished the song and I was out of breath. I couldn’t breathe! So, before leaving the stage, I punctuated its dimensions. I wake up like crazy trying to figure out the length of the scene so I can recreate it when I get back to my garden.” “So that’s what I did. I paced it, then set up a mic stand the exact distance I needed to cover. The next day I was just in my backyard rehearsing and doing star jumps, just to get my cardio up a bit,” he finished.
A Royal Concert
The royal, mum-of-three, also joked with the artist about her outfit: “I was wearing my stage costume and me and Kate were joking that someone should vacuum [vacuum] some of my stones the next morning because they would probably fall while I was walking around,” Ryder told PEOPLE.
Around 13.4 million Britons tuned in to the Jubilee concert, according to the BBC, not including millions more around the world via the internet. This event featured epic performances from stars like Alicia Keys, Duran Duran and Rod Stewart. Queen Elizabeth II was still the star of the evening with a sketch of her having tea with Paddington Bear while pulling a marmalade sandwich from her purse, which had been made. The show has done many hours, such as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince William or even Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.
