Juan Carlos of Spain: exiled in the United Arab Emirates, the former king still presents his Christmas wishes

Greeting cards for the end of the year celebrations are a real tradition. And this year, despite the Coronavirus epidemic and the health crisis, the royal families have stuck to their traditions. In mid-December, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton sent their card, with an astonishing shot. A few days later, the Spanish royal family also sent their greeting card for the year 2021 to come. Exactly as in previous years, the card is illustrated with a painting on “the Nativity” by the Spanish painter Juan Correa de Vivar. On the back, King Juan Carlos I and his wife Queen Sofia signed their two names.

An exile in the United Arab Emirates

Although their card is similar to that of previous years, this year 2020 will have been very eventful for the royal couple. And for good reason, since August, Juan Carlos has found refuge in the United Arab Emirates, in Abu Dhabi more precisely, where he is in exile. As a reminder, the former head of state is accused of having received several hundred million dollars in a Swiss account from the Saudi King Abdullah. Spanish justice and Swiss justice are currently carrying out several investigations. Although Juan Carlos feels very isolated, he will not be able to return to Spain for the holiday season.

Felipe and Letizia’s menu

On the same day, King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia also unveiled their greeting card for the year 2021 to their people. The royal couple decided to do more original, since they chose a photo of their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Sofia. This adorable photo was taken last October 17, when all four were on an official visit to Asturias, in northern Spain. “May this Christmas bring us a New Year 2021 particularly full of hope”, tenderly wrote King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain on the back of their letter.
