This Wednesday, August 19, 2020, Queen Sofia appeared for the first time since the announcement of the departure of her husband, the former King Juan Carlos. The mother of King Felipe VI was spotted shopping in the streets of Palma de Mallorca, where she is currently staying with the rest of the royal family. Queen Sofia was not alone but accompanied by her sister, Princess Irene. Dressed in a colorful tunic and a smile on her face (a smile one can guess under the surgical mask), the 81-year-old sovereign appeared relaxed and even took the time to greet the photographers before getting into her car.
Since the announcement of the exile of Juan Carlos, many media have wondered about the future of the queen and if the latter would make the decision to follow or not her spouse. A source close to the family had confirmed to the Spanish daily El Pais that Queen Sofia would remain living in the Zarzuela Palace and would continue her institutional activities as well as the work of the foundation that bears her name. It seems officially, that the couple have decided to take different paths after 58 years of marriage.
Juan Carlos exiled in the United Arab Emirates
Currently the target of an investigation for corruption concerning accounts in Switzerland on which he would have received nearly a hundred thousand euros from Saudi Arabia, Juan Carlos left Spain on August 3. Speculation about his destination has been rife but after two weeks of silence and a few photos stolen from the tarmac at Abu Dhabi airport, the press service of the royal family of Spain informed the media with a simple text : “His Majesty King Juan Carlos has indicated to His Majesty’s House the right to communicate that on August 3, she moved to the United Arab Emirates, where she currently resides”. The ex-sovereign would reside at the Emirates Palace, a fortress where the price of the suite can reach 11,000 euros a night.
