Johnny Depp may have lost the battle but he does not admit defeat either. Indeed, the 57-year-old actor has decided to appeal the judgment of his defamation lawsuit against The Sun newspaper as announced by Deadline on Wednesday, December 9. As a reminder, in an article from 2018, the British tabloid had called Johnny Depp a “wife-beater” after the statements of Amber Heard. The actor first decided to appeal to the British Court but this was refused by Judge Andrew Nicol, in charge of the case. However, under UK law, the plaintiff can turn to the Court of Appeal himself without the approval of a judge. So Johnny Depp, who had until December 7 to do so, did not hesitate for a second. Many media including Sky News and The Guardian have reported on the register of pending appeal requests, publicly available and on which the name of the actor appears. However, the grounds for appeal have not been released and the date of the next hearing is still unknown to the general public. Will Johnny Depp win in the end?
An actor who risks his career
His lawyer had warned him that exposing his private life would have consequences on his career, but Johnny Depp still wanted to sue the tabloid. After losing his libel case against The Sun on November 2, the Pirate of the Caribbean actor revealed bad news to his fans. Indeed, a few days later, he had published a press release on his Instagram account in which he explained that Warner Bros had asked him to “resign from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts. I respected this request and I did so. accessed”. In addition, the Disney studio had decided in 2018 to remove Johnny Depp from the Pirates of the Caribbean saga for a while by explaining that the actor “has had his day” but that nevertheless, “he will be remembered”. A decision that may suggest that the private life of Amber Heard’s ex-husband has a lot to do with it. Even if his fans continue to support him, has Johnny Depp become Hollywood’s pet peeve?
