Jacqueline Kennedy, nicknamed “Jackie” is one of the most popular and photographed First Lady of the United States. The former wife of John F. Kennedy died on May 19, 1994. 28 years later, she still represents a fashion icon thanks to her elegance and designer looks. And if she appeared daily with a perfect body, the woman inflicted a draconian diet behind the scenes.
Indeed, Jacqueline Kennedy had become obsessed with her weight after the assassination of her husband. According to Kathy McKeon, her ex-governess who assisted her for 13 years, the mother of four weighed 55 kg for 1.70 m. “She never had much of an appetite. The toll of the horror she survived was evident on her achingly thin body,” she wrote in the book “Jackie’s Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family.” .
Jackie Kennedy followed a draconian diet to keep the line
According to Kathy McKeon, Jackie Kennedy followed a very strict diet and allowed only 600 calories a day. She had also transcribed in her book what the daughter of John Vernou Bouvier III and Janet Norton Lee ate every day: “A hard-boiled egg and tea in the morning, cottage cheese with fruit for lunch and boiled chicken breast or fish with salad and steamed vegetables for dinner”.
And if Jackie Kennedy was prone to violent attacks of bulimia, she wanted to follow her strict diet and impose her vision of things on her daughter, Caroline. At just 10 years old, the little girl was often scolded by her mother about her weight. “She wanted to make sure that Caroline does not eat foods that make you fat and that she always dresses elegantly” had revealed the ex-governess. She also repeated to him regularly: “You are much too fat. No one will want to marry you”. Very harsh words for the only surviving child of the Kennedy couple.
