A New Yorker holds the world record for the most insect tattoos on his body. And the latter surprises his fans even more, since he literally has a phobia of insects!

His name is Michael Amoia, he is 47 years old and has 864 insects on his body. Native of Queens, in the United States, the 40-year-old was recognized by Guinness World Records in October, for having inked these hundreds of critters on his body. For the occasion, the New Yorker confides in the columns of the New York Post.

He fills his body with insects to control his fear

Michael’s artistic pilgrimage began when he was 21 years old. It is an ant that he has at the time tattooed on his forearm. “The first one I had was a queen of red ants,” the 40-year-old told the newspaper. From there, Michael lines his body with insects, including multiple spiders and two gigantic centipedes. But paradoxically, Michael is far from being in love with these little beasts. “A lot of people think I like insects, but it’s quite the opposite,” he says. “I’m afraid of insects, I hate them.”

For the 40-year-old, getting these hundreds of critters tattooed is a way to own up to his fears. To appropriate them and therefore to know how to manage them. But the symbolism does not stop there. “All the tattooed insects on my body have multiple meanings,” says Michael. “Some have very specific meanings related to the powers of these insects and where they are placed on my body.” The dragonfly on his temple, for example, has the power of deep and inner thought.

Michael is not the first to cover his body in tattoos. A Canadian made waves in 2020 after dying his entire body blue in a bid to boost his confidence. A young woman from the Philippines has also been talked about recently. Entirely tattooed from head to toe, the latter is discriminated against daily in her country of origin.
