Thursday, December 15, 2022, Netflix unveiled the last three episodes of the documentary series “Harry & Meghan”.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle talk about the many criticisms they have been subjected to on social networks.
The Duke of Sussex says he was very shocked by a photo posted shortly after the birth of his son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
Social networks do not give gifts, and that, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle know something about it. In the fourth episode of the documentary series Harry & Meghan, available since Thursday December 15 on the Netflix VOD platform, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex talk about the difficult months preceding their breakup with the British royal family. At the time, the couple, and in particular Meghan Markle, were constantly criticized in the media and on social networks. A particularly difficult period of which Prince Harry keeps a very precise memory…
In the Netflix documentary series, the 38-year-old Duke explains that he was deeply shocked by a photo posted on social networks in May 2019, just after the birth of his eldest son, Archie. “Archie had just been born, he remembers, installed alongside his wife. The media, social networks made things up. Someone posted a photo of a couple with a chimpanzee. At the top, it was written ‘Royal baby leaves hospital.’ That was one of the first things I saw.”

“It was a metaphor for how this family was treated”
A particularly cruel post that speaks for itself. But according to British writer Afua Hirsch, this particular photo says a lot about how the Sussex spouses were treated at the time. “It was a metaphor for the way this family was treated, believes the ex-journalist to The Guardian. Their dignity, their right to equal treatment, to have their humanity recognized and respected, were secondary to white and patriarchal media.”
Faced with these terrible attacks, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle explain that they have done everything to preserve their son, Archie. In particular, they refused to present him to the press on the steps of the Lindo wing of London’s St. Mary’s Hospital, as was the tradition. Prince Harry himself had, for example, been presented there by his parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Unfortunately, the decision to shield their son from the media has earned the Sussexes further criticism. “The amount of insults that we received (…) because we did not want to serve our child on a silver platter was incredible”, is indignant prince Harry.
Under the fire of criticism, the prince and his wife ended up making a radical decision. On March 31, 2020, the Sussexes announced that they wanted to distance themselves from the British royal family. They officially left office in 2021 and started a new life in Montecito, a suburb of Los Angeles. A controversial decision that still earned them many strong attacks today, both in the media and on social networks.
