Are Meghan and Harry still in the hearts of the British people? A survey conducted by the YouGov institute among 1,664 adults reveals that the couple’s popularity rating dropped after the interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday March 7. For the first time, more Britons, 48%, have a negative opinion of Prince Harry, compared to 45% have a positive opinion. Also, 31% of those polled have a positive opinion of Meghan Markle, a 39-year-old former American actress, while a majority of 58% consider her negatively. Prince Charles also fell in public opinion, gaining 6 points of negative opinions against him, with 42%, at the same time falling by 9 points in favorable opinions, with 49%.
However, the popularity ratings of other members of the British Royal Family remain unchanged, despite shocking revelations from Meghan and Harry. Queen Elizabeth II is still a favorite royal figure, with an 80% approval rating.
A broken family?
If public opinion was impacted by this interview, so too were the relations of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with the British royal family. In the interview broadcast on March 7, Prince Harry also spoke of his complicated relationship with his father, especially after his decision to distance himself from the royal family.
After admitting to Oprah Winfrey that Prince Charles had even stopped taking her calls for a while, he said he was “disappointed” with the latter’s attitude. “He’s been through something similar. He knows what pain is.” Tensions which should not have subsided with the recent unpacking of the couple, since, according to a source interviewed by Vanity Fair, Prince Charles would have been “overwhelmed by despair” upon learning that his son and his step- daughter had done an interview.
