Coronavirus pandemic requires, the 2021 Golden Globes hall was very empty this year. For the traditional annual awards ceremony, the nominees were invited to stay at home and connect by “video”. But not enough to impact the co-presenters Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, of Saturday Night Live, who animated the evening on both sides of America: one from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and the another from Rockefeller Center in New York.
Among the awards that caused the greatest stir was the posthumous presentation of the Best Dramatic Actor award to Chadwick Boseman for the film The Blues of Ma Rainey. It was his wife Taylor Simone Ledward who collected the award and paid tribute to his memory with emotion. The actor died in August 2020 from colon cancer at age 43. His performance in Black Panther had been particularly noted. The award for Best Dramatic Film goes to Nomadland by Chloé Zhao, a road movie that features Frances McDormand in search of a new identity.
On the television side, it was The Crown, which traces the history of the British royal family, which snatched the prize for the best series of the year. Its actress Emma Corrin also won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Lady Diana. In all, the series won four awards. Finally, the award for Best Actor in a Miniseries went to Mark Ruffalo for I Know This Much Is True.
