On December 25, 2019, three years after the death of George Michael, his sister, Melanie Panayiotou, also died. “We confirm that Melanie passed away suddenly. We simply ask that the privacy of the family be respected at this very sad time,” said a representative of the family. Aged 55, she was found dead at her home. According to her family, she had succumbed to broken heart syndrome and was buried in the unmarked grave of George Michael. Only seven months later, the real causes of his disappearance were made public. According to information relayed by the Daily Mail, the former hairdresser died after falling into a diabetic coma from diabetic ketoacidosis.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. The cause of this tragic death was certified by Inner London North Assistant Coroner Jonathan Stevens. Melanie “died of diabetic ketoacidosis, a complication caused by a lack of insulin and extremely high blood sugar,” he said. He also shed light on other conditions that led to his death such as hypertensive heart disease, obesity and bronchopneumonia.
Melanie Panayiotou and George Michael were very close
Very close to her brother, Melanie Panayiotou had never really recovered from his death. She used to accompany George Michael on his tours and travels around the world when he was at the height of his fame in the 1980s-1990s. Before dying of heart disease at age 53, George Michael had bequeathed most of his inheritance to him.
