Several months after the disappearance and discovery of the body of Gabby Petito, killed by her fiancé Brian Laundrie before he fled and committed suicide, the case took a new turn. Indeed, an independent investigation unveiled on Wednesday January 12 reported on the mismanagement of the situation by the police on August 12, 2021.

At the time, the pair were still alive and arguing fiercely after several weeks of traveling through US national parks. According to the investigation, the police team who filmed her meeting with Gabby Petito and her fiancé did not take the matter seriously and blamed the young woman rather than understanding that she was not “not the predominant long-term aggressor in this relationship.” Indeed, the influencer had confessed to having slapped her companion who threatened to leave her on the side of the road.

Gabby Petito was probably “a victim of domestic violence for a long time”.

During their meeting with the couple, the police officers suggested that Brian Laundrie file a complaint against Gabby Petito, examined “his clothes in search of injuries”, offered him treatment and ignored the words of the young woman. The latter had however indicated that she had also been struck. The report states that “Even when Gabby reported an argument that resulted in injury, her statement was ignored entirely, as officers appeared to be operating under confirmation bias that influenced how they interpreted the evidence and their theory. of the case”.

Finally, Brian Laundrie indicated that he wanted to give his fiancée another chance and one of the agents referred to the young man as “Mister Nice”. Captain Brandon Ratcliffe explained that Gabby Petito had been “depressed” and that the young woman was probably “a victim of domestic violence for a long time”.

If the management of the case of violence by the police is singled out by the independent investigation, it is however not possible to determine whether better care could have made a difference in this case with a tragic outcome.
