The start of 2021 promises to be tough for the UK. This Monday, January 4, Boris Johnson announced the total reconfinement of the country, as of the same evening, with much more restrictive measures than last November. If during the second confinement some establishments had remained open, this third isolation is more like the first one introduced in the spring, to such an extent that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will not return to school. So in view of the pandemic that continues to rage, Queen Elizabeth II made a decision fraught with meaning …
The 94-year-old sovereign has chosen to cancel the garden parties which were due to take place in 2021. Buckingham Palace has shared the news by announcing the cancellation of all the royal garden parties planned in London and Edinburgh , and this for the whole year to come. The information was then confirmed by Rebecca English, royal correspondent for the Daily Mail, on her Twitter account. “Unsurprisingly, Buckingham Palace made the decision not to organize garden parties in 2021. […] It was not possible to plan how they would be envisaged taking into account the precautions related to Covid- 19 “.
An eventful year for Elizabeth II
According to information from the Daily Mail, Queen Elizabeth II made the decision after she and the other members of the royal family encountered serious difficulties in organizing the events of the year 2021, due to the health crisis, confinements and rules to be observed. The royal garden parties organized each year are a way for the royal family to honor and thank the members of the public service, around a good tea and accompanied by music, in joy and good humor. It was Queen Victoria who started this tradition at Buckingham Palace in the 1860s.
Unsurprisingly, Buckingham Palace have taken the decision that garden parties will not take place in 2021. With deadlines approaching for committing to their go-ahead, it wasn’t possible to plan how they would be feasible taking into account Covid-19 precautions.
