The meeting between Lyon and Marseille, counting for the 14th day of Ligue 1, will last only a few minutes on Sunday November 21, 2021. Indeed, after five minutes of play, while Dimitri Payet was about to take a corner , he was hit in the face by a filled water bottle. While the match was interrupted by referee Ruddy Buquet for almost two hours, he was ultimately stopped altogether. “Contrary to what had been announced, the referee decided not to resume the game, considering that the safety of the players was not assured,” said the announcer, as reported by Le Point. A police source also said a man was taken into custody after being identified by CCTV cameras. He is suspected of being the author of the projectile which injured the Marseille player.
When the attacker received the water bottle in his face, he got down to the ground and stayed there for long minutes. He was then surrounded by players from both teams and members of the Marseille club’s medical staff. After finally getting up, he returned to the locker room with an ice pack on his temple. As soon as he arrived on the field, during the warm-up, he was greeted by chants of insults emanating from the two turns of the supporters of Lyon.

Dimitri Payet is regularly the target of projectile throws
As a reminder, this is not the first time that the player has been the target of projectiles. During the Nice-Marseille match, last August, he had already been hit by a bottle. The match was then interrupted 15 minutes from the end and was replayed behind closed doors and on neutral ground in Troyes on October 27 (1-1). Since the start of this new Ligue 1 season, too many matches have been marked by incidents from the stands.
