On November 25, 2020, Diego Maradona took his last breath at the age of 60. Shortly after, the prosecution opened an investigation to determine possible negligence or recklessness in the medical treatment administered to the footballer. He had died of a heart problem, alone in his residence in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires. A few months later, on Friday April 30, 2021, the expert report was released to the public and it is staggering. Indeed, as reported by L’Equipe, Diego Maradona would have been “abandoned to his fate” by the medical team who surrounded him shortly before his death. The “inadequate, deficient and reckless” treatment would have led to slow agony, it further writes in the 70-page document.
Also according to the report, the former Argentine number ten would have “started to die at least twelve hours before” to be found lifeless and endured a “period of prolonged agony”. The report further specifies that “the signs of danger to life he presented have been ignored” and that the nursing care provided is “tainted with deficiencies and irregularities”. Very heavy accusations brought against the medical staff who were at Diego Maradona’s side. “The attending medical team fully and completely considered the possibility of the patient’s fatal outcome, but remained absolutely indifferent to this issue, and did not change their behavior and medical approach (…) and gave up to his fate “, is still written.
Diego Maradona “would have had a better chance of survival”
Another sentence in the report will wipe out fans of the former footballer even more. Indeed, experts assured that the former world champion “would have had a better chance of survival” if he had been hospitalized in an appropriate and versatile care center.
