Death of Peter Green, member and co-founder of Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac fans are orphans. In a press release quoted by the British tabloid The Mirror, this Saturday, July 25, the legal advisers of Peter Green announced the death of their client. “It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announces his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep”, we can read. Founder of one of the biggest rock groups and renowned guitarist, he passed away at the age of 73. The causes of his death have not yet been disclosed.

Born in London on October 29, 1946, Peter Green took his first steps on the music scene at the age of 20 with the group Peter B’s Looners. It was then that he crossed paths with drummer Mike Fleetwood. A meeting that will forever change his life. If they had lost sight of each other for a few months, the two men had found themselves in the group Bluesbreakers. In September 1967, they decided to leave their sidekicks on stage to embark on their own adventure: thus was born Fleetwood Mac. Destabilized by the meteoric success of the group, Peter Green’s mental health gradually deteriorated. He then took refuge in religion, but also in artificial paradises, which only precipitated his downfall. In May 1970, after three years with Fleetwood Mac, he brutally slammed the door.

A descent into hell

It was then that Peter Green began a long journey through the desert, far from the music. Interned in a psychiatric hospital, he cumulates odd jobs, not making his return on stage until 1979 with the album In The Skies. Four unsuccessful albums later, he once again sank into depression and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. However, he was able to breathe new life into his career within the (now separate) Splinter Group.

On Instagram, the Fleetwood Mac group still wanted to pay tribute to Peter Green. “Thank you for all the years of music that will last forever”, is it written in the caption of a vintage photo of the principal concerned. More than a musician, Peter Green was also a great composer and hid behind the title Black Magic Woman, taken up and immortalized later by guitarist Carlos Santana.
