God save the queen. This Thursday, September 8, Elizabeth II died in her Scottish residence in Balmoral. At the start of the afternoon, a press release published by Buckingham Palace foreshadowed the worst. “Following a further assessment this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remain under medical supervision. The Queen continues to feel comfortable and at Balmoral,” wrote the Palace. Very quickly, members of the British Crown rushed to his bedside, including Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. In a few days, as per strict Royal Family protocol, the Prince of Wales will become the new King of England and officially succeed his mother to the throne.
But would the king have a queen by his side? No, because Camilla Parker Bowles will not officially be queen but will bear the title of queen consort, the king’s wife. In a rare message addressed to the nation for its platinum jubilee, it was Elizabeth II herself who revealed her wish. “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know that you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support you have given me, and I sincerely hope that when the time comes, Camilla is known as the queen consort“, had then entrusted Her Majesty, who had however never given her opinion on this question which agitates the Crown since the second marriage of her eldest son, in 2005. According to a spokesperson , Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles said they were “touched and honored by the words” of Her Majesty.
For Elizabeth II, Camilla Parker Bowles “deserved” this title
This decision, it was already several years that Elizabeth II wanted to give this honorary title to her daughter-in-law. “It’s something that has been on the Prince of Wales’ mind for some time, but the timing had to be right,” a source told the Daily Mail. “It’s been a done deal for some time, but the question has been know how best to announce it. They know some people won’t be happy, but the family thinks it’s the right thing to do.” Another senior royal source said Elizabeth II felt Camilla Parker Bowles ‘deserved’ to get the proper title because of her charity work: ‘She never tried to upstage her husband, she always played a supportive role to the Prince of Wales. He is his top priority.”
