The images are impressive and have frozen the hearts of spectators of the Denmark-Finland match, Saturday June 12, 2021, within the framework of Euro 2020. A few minutes before the half-time of the meeting, Christian Eriksen collapsed, victim heart failure. Quickly taken care of by his teammates, he was resuscitated by the medical team present on site. After long minutes of doing the cardiac massage, the player was finally evacuated from the conscious field to be taken to a hospital in Copenhagen. His condition was then stabilized. On the evening of the tragedy, Martin Boesen, the doctor of the Denmark football team, returned to the way he took care of the midfielder. He was the first, after the players, to intervene.
“We were called to the field when Christian collapsed, I had not seen him fall myself, but it was clear that he was unconscious”, said the practitioner, during a conference of hurry. “When we got near him he was on his side, he was breathing and I could feel his pulse, but suddenly everything changed and as everyone could see we started giving him a heart message. ” But with all the equipment available and the skills of the medical service, Christian Eriksen was resuscitated. “We managed to bring Christian back,” said Martin Boesen, who must be no stranger to the player’s return to life.
Why did the Danish team agree to resume the match?
If the anxiety was present for very long minutes, the Danish Football Federation (DBU) had made reassuring words during his transfer to the hospital. While the Inter Milan midfielder was undergoing a series of examinations, he was keen to reassure his teammates by asking them to resume the match, which had been interrupted. Manager Kasper Hjulmand praised the strength of character of his players: “They have decided to play and what they have tried to do is incredible.”
