The world of contemporary dance has just lost one of its most recognized and controversial figures. The day before his death, the Royal Danish Theater had decided to cancel performances of its production of the Frankenstein ballet due to “offensive behavior”. “The well-being and safety of our employees is a top priority for us. So we do not wish to perform (Scarlett’s) works at this time, and Frankenstein in spring 2022 has therefore been canceled,” said director Kasper. Holten in a statement. In 2006, Liam Scarlett joined the ranks of the prestigious Royal Ballet as a dancer. Six years later, he retired to become a resident choreographer. After staging several acclaimed plays, he was suspended from the Royal Ballet in January 2020 after being investigated for sexual harassment.

A few months later, this investigation concluded that there was nothing to follow, but the Royal Ballet had ceased its collaboration with Liam Scarlett. According to the Times, the choreographer was accused of having made inappropriate comments about the genitals for ten years, made sexual touching but requests for nude photos and sudden irruptions while the students he supervised changed. During his career, Liam Scarlett has also worked with the English National Ballet, the New York City Ballet, the American Ballet Theater and the Norwegian National Ballet.
