She may have been born into the English bourgeois class, have one of the most prolific modeling careers in the world and have a series of roles in cinema and television, the life of Cara Delevingne has not always been a long quiet river. Indeed, while she turns 28 on Wednesday August 12, it turns out that a few years ago, when she was 15, the it-girl was particularly troubled by a discovery within her family, which plunged her into a terrible disease: depression.
It was during Women in the World in 2015 that Cara Delevingne publicized her battle with depression, which began in her teens when she discovered her mother, Pandora’s addiction. “It’s something that I haven’t been open to, but it’s a big part of who I am,” she told Vogue the same year. A terrible discovery for the model, who began to seek treatment the following year, leaving school for six months. During this period, she specifies today to have followed a drug treatment, “a little stronger than Prozac” which would have saved her life so much she was then in the worst.
Cara Delevingne “scratched to the point of bleeding”
If she has long struggled to talk about this past, Cara Delevingne today no longer makes it a taboo, and admits that at the time, she was “hit by a massive wave of depression, anxiety and self-hatred, where the feelings were so painful [that she] banged her head against a tree in an attempt to knock [herself] out. ” “I never cut myself, but I scratched myself to the point of bleeding. I just wanted to dematerialize myself and ask someone to sweep me,” she explained in the columns of Vogue. However, considering herself “lucky” to be born into a wealthy environment, the ex-fiancée of Ashley Benson thus nourished a “vicious circle”, because she felt “guilty of these feelings”.
Nevertheless, this disease will push, among other things, the model to give up her studies, however promising her parents to find a job. Something she did the following year, thanks in particular to the contacts of her sister Poppy, also a model. Spotted by Sarah Doukas, the director of the Storm agency, Cara Delevingne quickly went on to shoot for the biggest fashion brands and set foot on the catwalks of the most prestigious designers, becoming in the process the muse of some of them, like Karl Lagerfeld. And she is now healed of her ailments. “The only treatment that works is to admit that you’re sick. Then to communicate and focus on those little things that give you happiness,” she confided last September.
