Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds stand together for Ukraine. While since February 24, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their country to escape the Russian offensive, the couple took the floor this Saturday, February 26 on social networks to come to their aid. They called on Americans to donate to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), promising to match every euro raised for Ukrainian refugees. “In 48 hours, countless Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes to their neighboring countries. They need protection,” wrote the interpreter of Deadpool on Twitter. “If you donate, we’ll double up to $1 million, to double the support.”
For his part, Blake Lively spoke on Instagram, in the caption of a photo of the UNHCR on which a child reaches out to an adult. “Ryan Reynolds and I are doubling every dollar donated to UNHCR up to 1 million”¸ she repeated. “UNHCR is on the ground to help the more than 50,000 Ukrainians who had to leave their homes in less than 48 hours. They are saving lives and working with neighboring countries to ensure the protection of these families.”
Already 400,000 refugees
At the start of the Russian military operation, announced on the night of February 23 to 24 by Vladimir Putin, nearly 400,000 people have fled Ukraine and their number “continues to increase”, the United Nations and the Polish authorities. About half are believed to have found refuge in Poland and another 43,000 have crossed the Romanian border. Hungary and Slovakia have also opened their borders to Ukrainian refugees.
