Black model Jourdan Dunn believes she was paid less than her white colleagues

It has been causing a sensation on the catwalk and in advertising campaigns for more than a decade. Jourdan Dunn, 30, made the model’s history by becoming the second black supermodel to walk for Prada since Naomi Campbell in 1997. In 2014, then 24, she became the first black British model to climb into the Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of the world’s highest paid models. Despite her popularity, Jourdan Dunn said – when she was invited to the microphone of the TTYA Talks podcast – to have been paid less than other models on joint projects. For the British top, this disparity is explained by her skin color. “I remember the girls I was with, my best friends in the modeling world, Cara (Delevingne) and Karlie (Kloss), I know their pay was different from mine, even though we were doing the same job,” Jourdan Dunn remembers. She adds, “Come to think of it, it’s really shitty, I mean what’s the difference between them and me? But obviously the difference is our skin color. But now I know my worth.”

Jourdan Dunn, determined to change the modeling industry

Faced with inequalities and the lack of diversity still very present in the world of fashion, Jourdan Dunn tries to use his influence to change the situation. “Now when I’m in the art direction and I’m able to pick who I want on the shoots, I always make sure I bring in young black creatives,” she said. Jourdan Dunn says she was also inspired by another black model of her generation, Chanel Iman, who “always made it known when she didn’t like something in her hairstyle or her makeup”, explains the top before adding : “Me, I said nothing and tried to fix it in the toilet, so as not to upset anyone.”
