A progressive icon of democratic socialism, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making headlines following a feminist discourse. This Thursday, July 23, the representative of the 14th district of New York deplored the sexist remarks of Ted Yoho, another elected member of the House of Representatives under the Republican label. The latter had called her a “fucking bitch” in front of a journalist from The Hill site. He apologized, citing his wife and two daughters, defending himself on charges of sexism. “This problem does not boil down to a single problem,” replied the elected representative of the US Congress. “It’s cultural. It’s a culture (…) of impunity, of accepting violence and violent language against women.” But if this speech is the buzz, his career deserves so much attention. Born October 13, 1989 in the poor neighborhood of the Bronx, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez comes from a modest family from Puerto Rico. Graduated from Yorktown High School in New York in 2007, she had managed to bluff the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after winning a science competition.
MIT chose its name to baptize an asteroid, (23238) Ocasio-Cortez. If she wanted to become a gynecologist first, she finally turned to a course in economics and international relations at Boston University. Studies that she had to stop dead following the death of her father, Sergio Ocasio, who died of lung cancer. Back in her native Bronx, she then embarked on a long battle for her succession alongside her mother, Blanca Cortez. An experience that helped her learn “how court-appointed lawyers to administer an estate can enrich themselves at the expense of families struggling to understand bureaucracy.” After telephone canvassing for Barack Obama in 2008, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Ted Kennedy, focusing on immigration and family reunification issues. She graduated three years later.

Bernie Sanders heiress
Ex-waitress and barmaid, also working for the National Hispanic Institute, the elected then committed to Bernie Sanders during the presidential primary of 2016 (reiterating this support for the election of 2020). But it was finally in April 2018 that she took off, when she launched in the race for Congress. On November 6 of the same year, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became representative of New York’s 14th district in the House of Representatives, the youngest candidate ever elected to the United States Congress. Since her rise, she has become the bête noire of Republican men. Starting with Donald Trump, who called on him to “return” to where she came from, just as he had been able to do by evoking other elected Democrats, in July 2019.
Used to sexist remarks since entering politics, she had also responded on her Twitter account. “You are angry because you don’t believe in an America in which I represent a district of New York, or Minnesota elected Ilhan Omar, where Rashida Tlaib fights for Michigan families, where Ayanna Pessley takes care the plight of little girls in Boston. ” A strong woman, a rising star of the Democratic Party, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is nevertheless a discreet woman in love. However, she shares the daily life of a certain Riley Roberts, as revealed by our colleagues from the magazine Marie Claire.
