Prince Harry unveiled his memoirs on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
He returned to his relationship with Princess Margaret.
The Duke of Sussex remembered a gift from his great aunt.
In his memoirs “The Substitute” unveiled on Tuesday January 10, 2023, Prince Harry confided in his relationships with the various members of the royal family. He revealed that Queen Elizabeth II’s sister Princess Margaret was “almost a stranger” to him. Indeed, according to the Duke of Sussex, the one he called Aunt Margo did not inspire him with any particular feeling, except “a certain pity and a pronounced discomfort”.
Meghan Markle’s husband thus remembered a significant episode of his adolescence, during a Christmas celebrated at Sandringham with the entire royal family. When opening presents, he chose the smallest present first, which was from his great aunt. “I tore the paper. It was… a ballpoint pen? Oh a ballpoint pen, Wow” he recalled before continuing “There was a little fish-shaped eraser hanging on it”. A gift that had confirmed his opinion of the queen’s sister, whom he had found very cold.
Prince Harry would have liked to know Princess Margaret better
If he especially remembers the dark look of Princess Margaret, Prince Harry would have liked to know her better. Indeed, according to him, they had a lot in common, starting with their rank within the monarchy: “Two substitutes”. Both shared a certain relationship of rivalry with their elders, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William.
In addition to this similarity, the father of Archie and Lilibet confided that his great aunt sometimes reminded him of his mother, Princess Diana. “Rebellious personalities, one like the other, and who had the reputation of being sirens” he explained. What make the teenager want to get to know her, despite her distant attitude. Finally, Princess Margaret died on February 9, 2002 at the age of 71, when Prince Harry was only 17 years old.
